Operations

The Life of Riley is a United States registered and captained motor vessel (home port - Charleston, South Carolina).  The Life of Riley is a surprising complex operation, with redundant operational and safety systems.  Here's some of the details of our vessel for the interested, and perhaps we can make the unsure a little more confident about life aboard a luxury yacht!

The Life of Riley was built as a world class passage making luxury yacht, capable of open water ocean travel in all conditions.

Here's some details...

Motive Power

The Life of Riley features twin Caterpillar 3208 diesel engines for power, fuel economy and reliability.  The engines are located amidships, underneath the main salon in an insulated and sound shielded engine room.  The engines are fuelled from three fuel tanks totaling over 2500 gallons capacity!  We can run continuously for days if need be without fuel or provision stops.

Electrical

The Life of Riley has three electrical systems:

  • Direct current (battery / engine powered) for navigation electronics, ship's lighting and engine starting
  • Regular 120/220VAC (normal North American power) powered by one of two on-board electrical generators that run off diesel fuel. These sound shielded generators are located in the engine room amidships, and supply most regular electricity
  • A 110VAC inverter system that makes regular 110 volt power from a large bank of 12 volt batteries. This system runs our refrigeration system so that even without generators our refrigeration system is on

Fresh Water

On board The Life of Riley we make our own fresh water when required with our on-board fresh water maker. This desalination unit can produce over 500 gallons per day of sparkling pure fresh water from seawater.  Many yachting vacations are less than comfortable because they rely on dockside connections for fresh water, and fresh water tanks that need filling often.  You can shower with fresh water as often as you like, and we'll never tell you have to wait till we get into port!

Rough Water & Bad Weather

We generally never encounter bad weather or rough water during the busy season in the Caribbean, but if we did, The Life of Riley is equipped with automatic stabilizers, just like the huge cruise ships.  The stabilizers automatically minimize the rocking motion of traveling through waves and rough water.  Stabilizers can make the difference between arriving on time at a destination in reasonable comfort versus waiting out bad weather at anchor and missing scheduled return flights home.

Navigation, Computing & Electronics

The Life of Riley is fully equipped with state of the art navigation and electronics systems.  Our GPS systems link in with our automatic navigation and piloting system, allowing us to precisely travel from waypoint to waypoint without even touching the ship's steering!

We have commercial quality shipboard radar, weather fax, satellite communications, digital and analog cellular communications and digital wireless data facilities on board.  We can and do connect anywhere to the Internet for electronic mail and world wide web updates.  Given the bandwidth limitations of available digital wireless communications, we limit serious "web-surfing" to dockside connections using normal telephone service.

Environmental Controls

The Life of Riley is equipped with on-board heating and cooling systems, making travel anywhere in the world possible.  Since we spend the busy season in the Caribbean, we have very capable air conditioning - we can keep all the occupied spaces on The Life of Riley at comfortable and cool temperatures.  Sleeping cabins can individually adjust both air conditioning and heating to suit, as well as control air movement via built-in fans and air exchangers.

Safety Systems

The Life of Riley maintains two outboard-powered dinghies and a safety checked offshore automatically inflatable rescue raft.  We have on-board satellite emergency locator beacons as well as multiple radios, telephones and communication systems.  Our most important safety system is our experienced and U.S. Coast Guard certified captain and crew - we avoid trouble before it happens!  The Life of Riley is our home, and we do not endanger her or our guests!
